This is my first Aquaponics System. I started with 880 Mozambique Tilapia and 500 plants or so. I plan on expanding the grow beds outside of the green house in the Spring to handle the needs of the fish as they grow larger. This system is built mostly out of scrounged materials. I built the fish tank out of palates and old non-toxic vinyl billboards. Unlike hydroponics and aquaculture, aquaponics uses the same water and little or no chemicals. The fish eat plants (duck weed) and the plants filter out the fish waste, making it a perfect organic, symbiotic relationship. My goal with this system is to eliminate as many technological inputs as possible so that it can be repeated in developing nations. I plan on applying Aquaponics technology in third world countries and training people who work in developing nations. Aquaponics has the potential to put a serious dent in the hunger problem around the world. It is so simple and basic that with a little bit of training and some ingenuity, just about anyone can build and manage a system on a family scale or large scale. My first application in the field will be in Guadalajara at an orphanage that constantly struggles with food acquisition.
